The agricultural revolution of the High Middle Ages was one of the most important transformations in European history. From roughly the year 1000 to the year 1300, a series of technical and organizational innovations — the heavy plow, the three-field system, the horse collar, the horseshoe, and the expansion of cultivation into new lands — dramatically increased the productivity of European agriculture, supported a near-doubling of the European population, and laid the foundations for the commercial revolution of the period. The three-field system of crop rotation, in particular, was one of the most important innovations of the medieval period, and it remained the standard form of agricultural organization across much of Europe until the modern era.

The standard treatment of the medieval agricultural revolution is B. H. Slicher van Bath, “The Agrarian History of Western Europe, A.D. 500–1850” (1963). The French Annales school — Georges Duby in particular — is the most influential work on the social and demographic consequences. The Three-Field System

The three-field system was the standard form of agricultural organization across most of northern Europe in the period. The system divided the arable land of a village or manor into three large fields, each of which was divided into many small strips that were scattered across the field. One field was planted in the autumn with winter grain — usually wheat or rye — one was planted in the spring with spring grain — usually oats, barley, or legumes — and one was left fallow to recover its fertility. The fields were rotated each year, so that the fallow field of one year became the winter-grain field of the next, the winter-grain field became the spring-grain field, and the spring-grain field became the fallow field.

The three-field system had a number of advantages over the older two-field system. First, it increased the proportion of land under cultivation in any given year from one-half to two-thirds, a significant increase in productivity. Second, it diversified the crops that could be grown, with the spring planting allowing for the cultivation of oats and legumes that were not suitable for autumn planting. Third, it reduced the risk of total crop failure, since the diversity of crops and the rotation of fields made it less likely that all the crops would fail in any given year. Fourth, it improved the fertility of the soil, since the fallow year allowed the soil to recover and the legumes in the spring planting added nitrogen to the soil.

The three-field system required a high degree of cooperation among the peasants of a village. The plowing, sowing, and harvesting of the fields had to be coordinated across the village, and the commons — the fallow field, the pasture, the meadow, and the woodland — had to be managed in common. The village assembly, presided over by the lord or his steward, made decisions about the rotation of crops, the timing of agricultural operations, and the management of the commons.

The three-field system was not adopted in all parts in medieval Europe. In the Mediterranean regions — Italy, southern France, and Spain — the two-field system remained in use in many areas, and the climate allowed for the cultivation of olives and grapes in addition to grain. In the Low Countries and in some parts of Italy, more intensive systems of agriculture developed, with multiple crops per year and sophisticated systems of irrigation and drainage. The three-field system was most fully developed in northern France, England, Germany, and the Low Countries, and it remained the standard form of agricultural organization in these regions until the eighteenth or nineteenth century.

The Heavy Plow

The heavy plow (also known as the carruca or the wheel plow) was one of the most important agricultural innovations of the medieval period. The heavy plow was developed in the late Carolingian period, perhaps in the eighth or ninth century, and it gradually spread across northern Europe in the tenth and eleventh centuries. The heavy plow was designed to turn over the heavy, wet soils of the North European plain, which had resisted the lighter Mediterranean plow (the aratrum). The heavy plow had a coulter to cut the soil, a share to lift it, and a moldboard to turn it over, and it produced a series of parallel ridges and furrows that improved drainage and aeration.

The heavy plow was expensive to buy and to maintain, and it required a team of eight oxen to pull it. The cost of a heavy plow and team was often beyond the means of an individual peasant, and it was typically provided by the lord or by a group of peasants who pooled their resources. The use of the heavy plow stimulated the development of cooperative labor arrangements in the medieval village, and it was a factor in the emergence of the manor as the basic unit of agricultural production.

The heavy plow had a major impact on the medieval landscape. The heavy plow made it possible to cultivate the heavy soils of northern Europe that had been impossible to cultivate with the lighter Mediterranean plow. The heavy plow also made it possible to cultivate the hillsides and other marginal lands that had been considered uncultivable before. The expansion of cultivation into new lands was a major feature of the medieval agricultural revolution, and it was a major factor in the demographic growth of the period.

The Horse Collar and the Horseshoe

The horse collar and the horseshoe were two innovations that made the horse a practical alternative to the ox for plowing and other heavy work. The horse collar — a set of padded leather straps that fit around the horse’s neck and shoulders — distributed the weight of the load on the horse’s shoulders rather than on its neck, allowing the horse to pull heavy loads without choking. The horseshoe — a U-shaped piece of metal nailed to the horse’s hoof — protected the hoof from wear and tear and allowed the horse to work on hard or rocky ground.

The horse collar and the horseshoe were developed in the early medieval period, perhaps in the ninth or tenth century, and they gradually spread across Europe in the tenth and eleventh centuries. The use of horses for plowing increased the productivity of agriculture, since horses are faster and more powerful than oxen, and it also increased the speed of transportation and communication across the countryside. The horse was also a more prestigious animal than the ox, and the possession of a horse was a symbol of status and wealth in the medieval countryside.

The Expansion of Cultivation

The expansion of cultivation into new lands was a major feature of the medieval agricultural revolution. The growth of population created a demand for more land, and the improvements in agricultural technology made it possible to cultivate lands that had been considered uncultivable before. The expansion of cultivation took several forms: the clearing of forests, the draining of marshes, the reclamation of floodplains, and the colonization of new lands in eastern Europe and the Baltic.

The clearing of forests was a major feature of the medieval landscape. The great forests of northern and central Europe — the Black Forest, the Thuringian Forest, the Harz Mountains, and many others — were gradually reduced as peasants and lords cleared the land for agriculture. The clearing of forests provided new land for cultivation, new sources of timber and fuel, and new grazing for livestock. The clearing also had negative consequences, including soil erosion, flooding, and the loss of habitat for wildlife.

The draining of marshes was another major feature of the medieval agricultural revolution. The great marshes of the Low Countries, the Po Valley, and the English Fenlands were gradually drained and reclaimed for agriculture. The draining was a major engineering enterprise, requiring the construction of dikes, canals, and pumping stations, and it was often undertaken by monastic communities or by groups of peasants who pooled their resources. The drained land was highly productive, and it supported some of the densest populations in medieval Europe.

The colonization of new lands in eastern Europe and the Baltic was a major demographic and economic phenomenon. The Ostsiedlung — the great German, Flemish, and Dutch settlement of the lands between the Elbe and the Oder, Silesia, Pomerania, Prussia, and the Baltic — transformed the demographic and political map of central Europe. The colonization was encouraged by the local princes, who saw the settlement as a way of increasing their revenue and strengthening their political power. The colonization was often accompanied by the conversion of the native pagan populations, and it was a major factor in the Christianization of the Baltic region.
